World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation 2025

Every year, on September 1, Christians around the world mark the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This day was established by Pope Francis in 2015, the same year he released his landmark encyclical Laudato Si’, calling us to care for our common home. It is a time to pause, pray, and recommit ourselves to the work of ecological stewardship, recognizing that our faith calls us to protect the beauty and integrity of God’s creation.

The day also opens the Season of Creation, an ecumenical celebration running until October 4 (the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi). During this season, Christians of many traditions join together in prayer, action, and advocacy for the environment.

This year’s theme, chosen by Pope Francis, is “Seeds of Peace and Hope.” In his message for the occasion, Pope Leo reflects on how, in Christ, we are called to be seeds that bring life and renewal, even in barren places. He points to the urgent ecological and social crises of our time—climate change, pollution, deforestation, and the exploitation of natural resources—which wound not only creation but also the poor and marginalized who suffer most from environmental destruction.

Pope Leo reminds us that caring for creation is not optional but a core part of Christian faith and justice, encompassing social, economic, and ecological dimensions. He calls us to move from words to action, cultivating a relationship of responsibility with the natural world and sowing seeds of justice, peace, and hope.

As he prays, may God’s Spirit make these seeds bear abundant fruit in our lives, our Church, and our world.
